I haven't done much of anything "productive" in the last several weeks. It has felt necessary, and hard—and subversive, revolutionary even. I feel anxious about saying this. I hear folks on my right mocking me for laziness and on my left annoyed by my privilege. But there's a reason I'm saying it anyway. When I first heard @glennondoyle'sanalogy comparing people with mental illness to canaries in the coal mine of society—giving us the gift of sensitivity to the poisons in our world—it also resonated in terms of my autoimmune condition. Some of the environmental factors triggering my illness are more like *actual* poisons, and some of them are things like stress and lack of sleep. Things I once thought I "should" be able to handle, because I'd been conditioned to believe I owed the world (and my corporate bosses) every ounce of my time and energy, and more. Learning to live with autoimmune disease has been *as much or more* about walking back from those attitudes as it has been about eating right or fixing my thyroid levels. This is not just about following my fancy doctor's recommendations; it's about trusting my body. Paying attention to her and believing I need what she says I need; I'm meant to show up in the world like she says I am; her thriving gives as much to the world as anything I've ever "produced." So when depression showed up in my life, I decided to honor my mental health in the same way. *Not* to wallow in depression, make excuses, or believe I'm supposed to enjoy my illness itself—but to *trust* that the illness was a sign I needed to rest, pay closer attention, make some changes on a different schedule than my rational side would have calculated. That trust looked like letting tears (and laughter) come as easily as they wished. Like doing a task or attending a social event, then taking hours doing nothing to recover. Like using my precious energy to invest in relationships and therefore asking for help with my half of the housework. It looked like - in the middle of feeling like there was nothing I liked or desired—paying attention to any glimmer of desire I might spot, and following it. (Cont.)

I think it's yoga that has kept me in line and sane over the last couple of years and especially in times of transition (when there is very little to hold onto). Getting to the mat or a meditation cushion whether it was for a moment of stillness (and inevitable wiggling), release (and sometimes uncontrollable sobbing) or a long, strong, sweaty asana practice (and sudden endorphin influx). Yoga made my days structured and mind clear. Bent over Barbell Rows with pretty strict form. Not going for strength here, so you wont see me using much momentum, if any at all, and the weight isn't so heavy either. You also get a stronger mind-muscle connection with a little bit lighter weight. Bent over barbell rows can be tricky. Proper form on this lift is essential. Hip hinge, back neutral, neck aligned with the back, core should be tight to support the back, knees flexed slightly, on the concentric, breath out, on the eccentric, breathe in. This is a lat dominant exercise, but a lot of muscles are involved with this lift and some others are assisting the lats with this movement.
