To some he might look calm, but he's not. It's alittle hard to see in the video, but he is intermittently trembling. Just because a dog is sitting or laying down does not mean he/she is calm. . Good thing I have to day off... #dillonthedeafsnootsdog#deafdogsrock#impatience#waitforcalmexpectations

Nearly three years ago, Atticus had his first seizure. I hadn’t had him very long at that point, so we weren’t sure if it was a one-off thing or if there was an underlying issue. We chose to wait and see, and when he only had a 1-2 more over the following year, my vet officially diagnosed him with idiopathic epilepsy. Because his seizures were so infrequent and sporadic, there was never any reason to medicate him, nor did they ever really affect our lives (aside from being slightly traumatic the evenings they did occur.) Fast forward to two weeks ago and he began clustering. After having upwards of 10 seizures over the course of 72 hours (three of them generalized/grand mals), we put him on medication and hoped we could get them stopped. He continued to cluster in the following days and spent a night in the ER, where I wasn’t actually sure I would be bringing him home. He experienced some pretty rough side effects from the medications, and was also completely wiped out from the intensity of continuing to seize and some of the emergency meds we had to use to get them stopped. We spent the last week on the family farm in MT, and I’m grateful to say I began to see glimpses of my sweet boy again. He was still very sedated, slept hard and a lot, and didn’t have great coordination, but in short spurts he began to tolerate the anticonvulsants a little better and show signs of his old self. I don’t know what the future will bring; everyone says it can take a few weeks to see how dogs truly tolerate these meds, and we might be in for a tough road of adjusting, adding, and tweaking what controls his seizures. Life has looked a lot different the last two weeks (Harper has been a TROOPER), and while I’m praying we’ll be able to return to a semblance of our old routine of hiking, camping, kayaking, etc., realistically, things have become more complicated. I will continue to do everything I reasonably can to make sure Atti’s quality of life is as good as possible, but the future is just unknown right now. I don’t have a whole lot more to say right now, but I do know I’m going to make the most of every minute and day I have left with him.

I had a dream that a vet tech came to my house with Taub and said they were able to save him and cure his epilepsy. I think that’s taubs way of telling me he is running seizure free over the rainbow bridge 🌈🐾💜
